Phone numbers
Line type
Line type is the kind of service a phone number belongs to: mobile, fixed line, VoIP, toll free, premium rate and so on.
How it works
Many countries assign number ranges by type, so the plan alone can often say "this is a mobile range". In some plans, including the one shared by the US and Canada, mobile and fixed numbers sit in the same ranges, and the honest answer is "fixed line or mobile".
Line type matters most before you send text messages (a landline cannot receive one) and when screening sign-ups, since some number types are used more often for abuse.
