Terms of service

The rules for using LookValid.

These terms cover your use of the LookValid website, API, MCP server, dashboard and free tools (together, the "service"). The service is provided by LookValid ("we"); write to us at hello@lookvalid.com. By creating an account, creating an API key or using the service you agree to these terms and to the acceptable use policy. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

1. Accounts and API keys

  • You must be able to form a binding contract, and you must give accurate sign-up details.
  • An API key acts as your account. Keep it secret. Everything done with a key is treated as done by you, and credits spent with it are spent. A key is shown once when you create it, and we store only a hash of it, so we cannot show it again.
  • You can revoke a key at any time from the dashboard or by writing to hello@lookvalid.com. Revoked keys stop working immediately.
  • If you think a key has leaked, revoke it and tell us at hello@lookvalid.com.

2. Credits and billing

The service runs on one universal credit balance per account. Each lookup has a price in credits, shown in the catalog and returned in the product documentation. We charge in this way:

  • Success billing. For most lookups you are charged only when the lookup finds something. A lookup that finds nothing, fails validation, times out or hits an unavailable data source costs nothing.
  • Per-call billing. A few lookups are marked as charged for every completed call, even when the result is empty. The product page says which.
  • Holds. While a paid lookup runs we hold its price from your balance. The hold is released if the lookup is not charged. A request that would take your balance below zero is refused with an insufficient credits error, and the lookup does not run.
  • Free repeats. Results are cached per account. If you repeat the same lookup within 7 days, you get the stored result and are not charged again. Another account pays for its own first lookup.
  • Records. Every charge is written to an append-only ledger. The usage view and the response of each lookup show what was charged.

Prices and plans are shown on the pricing page and at checkout, and we may change them for future purchases. Unused monthly plan credits roll over for 3 months, as stated on the pricing page and at checkout, and then expire. A subscriber can add a top-up of 10,000 credits at the rate of their plan, and those credits expire 12 months after they are added. Credits are not sold without a plan. Credits have no cash value and cannot be transferred or withdrawn.

3. Payments

Payments are handled by Stripe, our payment processor. Your card details go to Stripe and are never stored on our servers. We receive from Stripe the information needed to credit your account and issue receipts. Stripe's own terms and privacy policy apply to the payment. Plans renew, and you can cancel from the dashboard or by writing to hello@lookvalid.com, with the cancellation taking effect at the end of the paid period.

  • Trial. Starter, Growth and Professional each start with a 7-day trial that costs $1 at signup and allows 100 credits. One trial is given per card. If the trial credits are used before the trial ends, lookups pause until you start the plan yourself. When the 7 days end, the plan starts and your card is charged for the first month unless you cancel first.
  • Refunds. A first paid month can be refunded when you ask within 7 days of the payment. The $1 trial fee is not part of the first paid month. Refunds are handled by a person, who reviews each request: write to hello@lookvalid.com.
  • Enterprise. Enterprise starts at $1,999 a month for 1,000,000 credits, has no trial and is set up on a call. Larger volumes are quoted on the call.

4. Using the service

  • Follow the acceptable use policy. In particular, results must not be used to decide credit, employment, insurance, housing or similar eligibility.
  • Rate limits apply per API key: 200 requests per 10 seconds by default, with at most 16 lookups of your account in progress at once. A request body can be at most 64 KB. Over-limit requests are refused and are not charged.
  • Do not resell raw results as a competing lookup service, and do not use the service to build a database of results for redistribution. Using results inside your own product for your own users is fine.
  • You are responsible for having a lawful reason to look up each phone number, email domain, IP address or website you submit.

5. Data we return, and its limits

Lookups combine open datasets, public registries and the public pages of websites. Results are provided for information. They can be incomplete, out of date or wrong. For example, a numbering-plan check cannot tell whether a phone number is in service, IP geolocation is approximate, and complaint counts are unverified reports made by consumers. Each result lists its sources, and some sources require a credit line, which you must keep when you show the result to others. IP geolocation uses DB-IP Lite data, licensed CC BY 4.0: "IP geolocation by DB-IP" (db-ip.com).

6. Your data

You keep your rights in what you send us. You give us permission to process it to run the service, to cache results for your account for 7 days, to log requests as described in the privacy policy, and to keep the service secure. We do not sell your lookup data.

7. Free tools

Free tools on the website may run lookups without an account. They are provided as they are, may be limited or changed at any time, and these terms apply to them as well.

8. Availability and changes

We aim to keep the service running but do not promise uninterrupted service, and no uptime commitment applies unless we agree one with you in writing. Data sources can change or disappear, and a lookup may become unavailable. We may add, change or remove lookups, and we will say so in the changelog.

9. Suspension and ending

You can stop using the service and close your account at any time. We may suspend or end access if you break these terms or the acceptable use policy, if your use puts the service or others at risk, or if the law requires it. When we end access for your breach, unused credits may be forfeited.

10. Warranty and liability

The service is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, including fitness for a particular purpose, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss or for decisions you make from results. Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

11. Changes to these terms

We update these terms when the service changes. Material changes are announced on this site and by email to account holders before they apply to you. Using the service after a change means you accept it.
