Phone numbers
VoIP number: Voice over Internet Protocol
A VoIP number is a phone number delivered over the internet instead of a traditional phone line or a mobile network.
How it works
Many people use VoIP numbers legitimately for business lines and second numbers. They are also cheap to create in bulk, so they turn up often in fake sign-ups.
Where a country allocates ranges to VoIP providers, the numbering plan can flag them. Where VoIP numbers share ranges with ordinary lines, or have been ported in, only carrier data can tell.
