Free phone number lookup

Type in a phone number and get one answer: whether it is valid, what kind of line it is, where its area code is registered and, for a US number, which carrier received its block and how many complaints are on file.

Add the two-letter country, such as US or GB, only when the number has no + country code.

Try an example

The number you enter is sent from your browser to LookValid's lookup service to be checked. The service keeps the result, number included, for up to seven days so repeat checks are quick.

How it works

  1. Enter a number with its country code, or add a two-letter country such as US or GB for a number written the local way.
  2. The number is checked against its country's numbering plan. A US or Canadian number then goes on to the carrier records and the complaint records.
  3. You get the number in standard formats, its line type and area code region, the carrier block and the complaint count, with a link to the tool that goes deeper on each part.

What you can learn from a number

A lookup answers four practical questions. Is this a real number or a typo? What kind of line is it, mobile, landline, internet phone or toll free? Where was its area code registered? And for a US number, which carrier received the block it sits in and have people reported it?

Each part comes from a public source named in the table below, so you can see how far to trust it and what to do when the answer is thin.

Reading the carrier and complaint parts

The carrier is the one the number block was first assigned to. People change carriers and keep their numbers, so the block carrier is a strong hint and not a billing fact. When a block is pooled, both the carrier that received it and the holder of the whole code are shown.

The complaint count is the number of reports on file for that exact number, with the first and last report dates and the kinds of calls people described. A count of zero means nobody filed a report. It does not prove the number is safe.

What this lookup does not tell you

It does not return the name of the person or business behind a number, and it does not say whether the number is switched on, ported or reachable right now. Those need a live carrier query.

If you got a call and want to judge it, open the spam phone checker for the complaint history and the spam score built from it. To store a number cleanly, the phone number validator returns it in E.164, national and international form.

Frequently asked questions

Can I find out who owns a phone number?

No. This lookup shows what a number is and what is on file about it: its line type, area code region, carrier block and complaint count. It does not name the person or business behind it.

Is this phone number lookup free?

Yes. It needs no account and no card. Each visitor gets a daily allowance, and the API runs the same checks in your own forms and imports without that limit.

Why does a US number read landline or mobile?

The US and Canadian numbering plan hands out numbers in blocks and does not keep landline and mobile numbers apart, so it cannot say which one a number is. The carrier block is the best extra hint.

Why are the carrier and complaint parts missing for my number?

Both read US numbering plan records. A number in another country gets the number check and the line type, and the page says why the other two parts were skipped.

What is the difference between this and the phone number validator?

The validator returns the number in every standard format for your database. This page adds the carrier block and the complaint history to the same number so you can judge it in one step.
