Phone number format by country

The same phone number is written three ways: the national way people dial it at home, the international way with a plus and a country code, and E.164, the digits-only form software stores. Pick a country to see all three side by side.

United States has a national (trunk) prefix, 1. Dial it before the national number when you call from inside the country, and leave it out when you write the number with +1.

The country table is prepared on our server from libphonenumber data. Picking a country happens in your browser and nothing you choose is sent or stored.

How it works

  1. Search by country name, region code or calling code, or scroll the list.
  2. Pick a country to see one sample number written three ways: national, international and E.164.
  3. Read the digit counts and, where the country has one, the trunk prefix rule, then copy the form you need.

The three forms

National form is how a number is written and dialled inside its own country. It can include a trunk prefix and local spacing, for example 07400 123456 in the United Kingdom.

International form opens with a plus sign and the country calling code, followed by the national number minus any trunk prefix: +44 7400 123456. It is read the same way from every country.

E.164 is the same international number with the spaces and punctuation removed: +447400123456. ITU-T Recommendation E.164 defines the international public telecommunication numbering plan, and software normally stores and sends numbers in this one-line form.

The national (trunk) prefix

Some countries ask callers to dial an extra digit before the national number when the call stays inside the country. That digit is the national, or trunk, prefix. It belongs to the national form only: when you write the number with a plus and the country code, you drop it.

When libphonenumber lists a national prefix for a country, the tool states the rule for that country. Where it lists none, the tool shows the three forms and the digit counts and adds no rule.

About the example numbers and lengths

Each country shows one sample mobile number taken from libphonenumber metadata. It shows the layout, not a number to call.

The lengths listed for the national number are the ones libphonenumber accepts for that country when it checks a number. They cover every kind of number the country uses, so a country with fixed lines, mobiles and special services can list a wide range.

Frequently asked questions

What is E.164 format?

E.164 is a plus sign, the country calling code and the national number run together without spaces or punctuation, for example +447400123456. ITU-T Recommendation E.164 defines the numbering plan behind it. It is the form most software stores, because one number has exactly one spelling.

What is the difference between national and international format?

National format is how people write and dial a number inside their own country, often with a trunk prefix and local spacing. International format starts with a plus and the country calling code and leaves out the trunk prefix, so it can be dialled from anywhere.

What is a trunk prefix?

It is a digit or digits dialled before the national number for calls inside a country, such as 0 in the United Kingdom. It is dropped when the number is written with a plus and the country code. Not every country has one, and the tool states the rule only for countries where libphonenumber lists one.

Why do some countries list several number lengths?

A country can have fixed lines, mobiles and special services with different lengths. The list shows every length libphonenumber accepts for that country, and the example shows the length of one mobile number.

Are the example numbers real?

They are sample mobile numbers from libphonenumber metadata, chosen to show the layout of each country. Use them to see the format, not to place a call.

Does this tool check whether a number works?

No. It explains how numbers are written. To check a number against its country numbering plan, use the phone number validator.
