Engagement rate calculator

Engagement rate is the share of an audience that reacts to a post. Pick a platform, enter your average likes and comments per post, and get the rate with the formula written out.

Averages over a recent run of posts work best, with giveaways and other outliers set aside. Nothing you type is stored.

Engagement rate3.61%(620 + 48) / 18,500 x 100 = 3.61% [F = followers]

All the arithmetic happens inside your browser. No input leaves it and none is saved.

How it works

  1. Choose the platform. Instagram and X measure against followers, TikTok and YouTube against average views.
  2. Enter average likes and comments per post, plus followers or average views.
  3. Read the rate to two decimals, with the formula line showing your numbers.

The formula

Instagram and X: engagement rate = (likes + comments) / followers x 100.

TikTok and YouTube: engagement rate = (likes + comments) / average views x 100.

A rate against views asks how many people who watched reacted. A rate against followers asks how many people who could have seen the post reacted. They answer different questions, so do not compare one with the other.

What to enter

Work from per-post averages over a recent stretch of ordinary posts. Set aside giveaways, paid pushes and one-off outliers, since they pull the average away from a typical post.

Average the likes, the comments and the views or followers separately, then enter the three averages.

Reading the number

The calculator gives you the rate and the working, and leaves judging it to you. What counts as a strong rate shifts with account size, niche and platform, so the most useful comparison is your own rate over time, or against accounts like yours.

Follower-based and view-based rates answer different questions, so only compare a rate with others built on the same base.

A rate over 100 percent is possible, for example when views are low and reactions come from followers who did not watch. If you see one, check your inputs first.

Engagement can be bought

Services exist that sell likes and comments, so a high rate alone does not prove a real audience. When you vet an account, look at the comments themselves as well as the rate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate engagement rate?

Add the average likes and comments per post, divide by followers (Instagram, X) or average views (TikTok, YouTube), and multiply by 100.

Should I count shares and saves?

This calculator uses likes and comments only, so the number stays comparable between accounts. Add shares or saves yourself if you track them, and keep the same method every time.

Is my rate good?

The calculator does not grade it. What counts as strong depends on account size, niche and platform, so track your own rate over time and compare it with accounts of a similar size and topic, calculated the same way.

Why do I get more than 100 percent?

Reactions can outnumber the base you divided by, for instance when average views are low. Check the figures you entered. If they are right, the result is still valid.

Is my data stored?

No. Everything is calculated inside your browser and nothing goes to a server.
