DOT number lookup

Enter a USDOT number to read that carrier's record in the FMCSA Company Census File: operating status, docket numbers, classification, fleet size and the safety rating on file, each fact tied to the census column it came from.

Digits only, up to 8. A USDOT number is not the same as an MC number.

How it works

  1. Type the USDOT number: digits only, up to eight.
  2. Your browser asks the public Company Census File on data.transportation.gov for that number. It needs no key and no account.
  3. The page lists the fields the record actually holds, labels each with its census column, and leaves out contact details.

What the census file is

The Company Census File holds records for active, inactive and pending entities registered with FMCSA, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. FMCSA gives each entity record one USDOT number. The data portal listed the file as last updated on October 17, 2026 (read 2026-10-18).

What a match does and does not tell you

A match confirms that the carrier is registered and shows how it described itself on its registration filings. It does not show whether the carrier drives safely or whether its insurance is current. Check insurance on the certificates the carrier gives you.

The safety rating line is the rating field of the same census record, with its date. The data dictionary says a blank field means no safety review of the carrier has been conducted, and the page says no rating is recorded in that case. Ratings can be many years old, so read the date.

The "record added or reactivated" date is the date the record was created, reactivated or systematically updated in the registration system. It is not always the date the business first registered.

What this page leaves out

Phone numbers, email addresses and the names of company officers are in the census file but are never read or shown here. The location line gives city, state and ZIP only. When the census lists an entity as an individual, the page withholds the name because it would be a personal name.

This page covers registration data and the census file only. Insurance filings, crash and inspection history and carrier safety scores are held in other FMCSA systems that this page does not read.

Frequently asked questions

What does a USDOT number show?

It shows that FMCSA holds a registration record for the entity, and what that record says: status, classification, docket numbers, fleet and driver counts and the safety rating field. It does not show safe operation or current insurance.

Why does the page say a number was not found in the census file?

The census dataset returned no record for that number. The number may contain a typo, may not be issued, or may not be in this file. The page never calls such a number invalid, because only a number with a wrong format is invalid.

How does a USDOT number differ from an MC number?

A USDOT number identifies the entity in the census. An MC, MX or FF number is a federally assigned docket number for interstate operating authority. The census record can hold up to three docket numbers, each with an active or inactive status.

Why does a record show no safety rating?

According to the census data dictionary, a blank rating means no safety review has been conducted on that carrier. Many carriers have never been reviewed, so a blank is common and says nothing against the carrier.

Why are phone numbers and officer names not shown?

The census file includes them, but this page never reads them. It shows registration facts only, and withholds the name of an entity the census lists as an individual.
