Migration guide

Switching from 1lookup (1lookup.io) to LookValid

If you call 1lookup's API today, the move is 11 steps: 5 in the LookValid dashboard and 6 in your own code. Both products bill in credits from one balance, so the shape of your integration stays the same while the address, the key, the paths and the response fields change. This page lists what carries over, which of your lookups have a counterpart, and what is different.

What moves over

What carries over from 1lookup to LookValid
ItemOn 1lookupOn LookValid, and what you do
API key and sign-inCalls carry a secret key as a Bearer token in the Authorization header. Keys belong to an organization, and several can be held at once, so a rotation is create, deploy, delete. API access needs a paid plan. SourceSame header scheme, new key. A LookValid key is created on the Keys tab, and keys do not transfer between providers. If a client cannot set an Authorization header it can send X-API-Key instead.
Address and request formatEach lookup is a POST with a JSON body to a path under https://app.1lookup.io/api/v1, such as /phone or /email. SourceEach lookup is a POST with a JSON body to https://YOUR_API_HOST/v1/<product>. The product names differ, so each path is remapped using the overlap table.
Response shapeA success returns success: true and a data object; the credits a call spent are under data.metadata. SourceA lookup that ran returns HTTP 200 with found, data, reason, sources, credits_charged, credits_remaining and cache_hit at the top level. Update the parser once.
Repeat lookupsRepeat lookups are served from a 7-day cache and cost 0 credits, and a bypass_cache flag forces a fresh lookup. SourceRepeats by the same account inside 7 days are free and return cache_hit: true. There is no flag to skip the cache, so an input you need fresh is run after the window.
Rate limits and back-offStandard lookups are limited to 200 requests per 10 seconds on each key. A limited request returns 429 with Retry-After and X-RateLimit headers. Source200 requests per 10 seconds on each key, on every plan. A 429 carries Retry-After, so the back-off you wrote keeps working.
Lists and batch workA bulk job takes up to 100,000 rows in one API call and reports back by polling or a webhook. SourceLookValid runs lists from the Jobs tab: upload a CSV of up to 10,000 rows, choose the product, and download the results. List jobs are started in the dashboard, so a script that submitted jobs over the API is replaced by an upload.
AI clients over MCPA hosted MCP server at https://app.1lookup.io/api/mcp takes the key as a Bearer token, or a sign-in with OAuth. SourceConnect to https://YOUR_API_HOST/v1/mcp with the same style of key, or sign in with OAuth. Tools: phone, country_code, email_domain_check, ip, phone_spam, link_safety, carrier_lookup, vin_decoder, link_in_bio_lookup, domain_authority, domain_age, website_contacts_scraper, site_files, website_scraper, get_account. The free tools work with no key.
No-code automationsZapier, Make and n8n integrations are listed in its integration library. SourceRebuild each workflow in the same tool as a request step that calls LookValid with a Bearer key. The integrations pages have a recipe for Zapier, Make and n8n.
Balances and historyUnused subscription credits roll over for up to 3 months. SourceCredits come from a LookValid plan and unused monthly credits stay spendable for 3 months. LookValid has no import for another provider's balance or history, so download any results you still need before you end the old plan.

How much work it is

11 steps: 5 happen in the LookValid dashboard and 6 are edits to your own code or configuration.

  1. Start a LookValid plan (dashboard). Starter, Growth and Professional each start with a 7-day trial for $1 that allows 100 credits. The trial runs next to your current provider, so nothing has to stop first.
  2. Create an API key (dashboard). Open the Keys tab and create one key per application or environment. A key is shown once, so store it before you close the dialog.
  3. Run one lookup by hand (dashboard). Use the quick lookup on the dashboard overview with a value you already know the answer to, so you see the real response before you write any code.
  4. Point your client at the new address and key (your code). Requests go to https://YOUR_API_HOST/v1/<product>. The Authorization header with a Bearer key is the same scheme you already send; only the key and the address change. Read the key from LOOKVALID_API_KEY.
  5. Map each endpoint you call (your code). Use the overlap table above to swap each path. Anything that has no LookValid counterpart stays with its current provider.
  6. Update how you read a response (your code). Branch on found instead of success, read the result from data, and read the cost from credits_charged and credits_remaining.
  7. Update how you handle errors (your code). Error codes are lower case and each carries a retryable flag. Use the error table above to rename the codes your handler branches on.
  8. Keep your retry logic (your code). A 429 carries Retry-After and the X-RateLimit headers on LookValid too, so a back-off that reads Retry-After carries over. The limit is 200 requests per 10 seconds on each key.
  9. Move list jobs to the Jobs tab (dashboard). Upload a CSV, pick the column and the product, and download the results when the job finishes. A file holds up to 10,000 rows.
  10. Reconnect AI clients and automations (your code). Point each MCP client at https://YOUR_API_HOST/v1/mcp and send the same style of Bearer key. Rebuild each Zapier, Make or n8n workflow as a request step that calls LookValid with a Bearer key; the integrations pages have a recipe for each tool.
  11. Compare balances, then end the old plan (dashboard). Check the first runs against the credits LookValid reports for them. When you are satisfied, cancel the old plan at the end of the period you already paid for.

Differences

Where 1lookup and LookValid differ
Topic1lookupLookValid
Free planA free plan gives 25 credits a month for dashboard use. SourceLookValid sells paid plans only (Starter, Growth, Professional online, Enterprise on a call). The free tools on the website run a set of the same lookups with no account.
TrialEvery plan starts with a 7-day free trial with $5 of credits on Starter and $20 on the larger plans, and nothing is charged at signup. SourceStarter, Growth and Professional start with a 7-day trial for $1 at signup that allows 100 credits. If the allowance runs out first, lookups pause until you start the plan yourself. When the 7 days end, the plan starts and your card is charged for the first month unless you cancel.
Largest plan and custom volumeEnterprise has a free trial like the other plans, and a custom plan for more than 1,000,000 credits starts at $2,000 a month through its sales team. SourceEnterprise starts at $1,999 a month for 1,000,000 credits and is set up on a call; larger volumes are quoted there.
CancellingCancelling is self-serve in the dashboard. A paid plan keeps its access until the end of the period already paid for. SourceTo cancel a LookValid plan, write to hello@lookvalid.com from your account email. Keep the old plan running until its period ends while you test, so both providers answer in the meantime.
RefundsRefund requests are handled by a person, who follows up by email. SourceA first paid month can be refunded when you ask within 7 days of the payment. A person reviews each request; write to hello@lookvalid.com.
Products you useThe API reference lists 61 live endpoints across phone, email, IP, web, company, social and business data. SourceLookValid has 14 live lookups, 10 of them listed in the overlap table. A product with no LookValid counterpart stays with its current provider; you can run both on one codebase.

Questions

Do I have to change code to move from 1lookup?

Yes. The address, the key, the product paths, the response fields and the error codes differ, so the calls you make and the code that reads their answers are edited. 6 of the 11 steps are code or configuration changes, and 5 happen in the dashboard.

Can I keep my 1lookup plan while I test LookValid?

Yes. 1lookup's billing help says a paid plan stays accessible until the end of the period you already paid for after you cancel, so you can cancel first and keep testing, or run both until the period ends. A LookValid trial starts without ending anything else.

Which lookups can I move?

10 lookups have a LookValid counterpart, listed in the overlap table with their paths and credit costs on both sides. Two of them, the phone number check and the email address check, answer a narrower question on LookValid, and the table says how.

How are repeat lookups billed?

Both products serve a repeat lookup from a cache for 0 credits: 7 days on LookValid, 7 days on 1lookup per its API documentation. LookValid has no switch to skip the cache, and the cache belongs to your account.

Do I get a LookValid balance to match what is left on my old plan?

No. LookValid credits come from a LookValid plan, and the trial allows 100 credits. Plan credits stay spendable for 3 months after they arrive.
