Carrier lookup
A carrier lookup names the telephone company that currently serves a number.
How it works
The first digits of a number used to point at one carrier. Because people can keep their number when they switch provider, that is no longer true in most countries, so an accurate answer needs a query against porting or carrier records.
Knowing the carrier helps route messages, spot numbers on virtual-number providers, and understand why a message was filtered. It does not tell you whether the person behind the number is who they claim to be.
