How can a call center check phone numbers and callers before agents dial?
Check each number against its country numbering plan, see the carrier originally assigned a US number block, and read the public consumer complaint count for the number, all in one request per lookup. Agents and dialer rules get facts about the number before a call is placed.
The problem
A dialer works through a list at speed, and every row that cannot be reached still costs an agent seat or a dial attempt. Numbers typed with the wrong digits, the wrong country prefix or a stray extension are common in lists that came from web forms and spreadsheets.
Supervisors also want to know which numbers deserve a different approach. A number that many people have reported as a nuisance caller is a different case from a number with no reports, and a toll-free or premium-rate number needs different handling from an ordinary one.
When this check lives in a spreadsheet macro or a one-off script, nobody trusts it a month later. One API that returns the same fields every time can sit in the list import and in the agent screen alike.

What LookValid does for this
| Check | What it gives you | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| Clean the list at import | Each number is parsed against its country numbering plan and returned in E.164, national and international formats, with the number type the plan assigns, such as mobile, fixed line or VoIP. It does not query carriers, so it cannot say whether a line is active. | 1 credit per valid number |
| See who was assigned the block | For US numbers, returns the carrier originally assigned the number block, the rate center and the state, with the date of the public report. A number moved to another carrier still shows its original one, so treat it as a hint about the block. | 1 credit per lookup (numbers outside the covered numbering plan areas are free) |
| Read the complaint history | Returns how many consumer complaints public FTC and FCC data holds for the number, when they were filed and what kind of calls were reported. Complaints are unverified consumer reports, so use the count to route a number, not to judge the caller. | 1 credit per number with complaints on record |
| Look up the dialing rules | Give a calling code, region or country name and get the national number lengths, trunk and international prefixes and example numbers. Handy when agents dial abroad and the prefix rules differ. | 1 credit per lookup (an unknown code, country or name is free) |
A real request and response
This request checks one US number the way a list import would. The response shows the formats the dialer can store, the number type the plan assigns and a note on what the check cannot tell you.

Questions
Can this tell me whether a phone number is active before I dial?
No. The phone check uses numbering-plan rules only, so it confirms the number is well formed for its country and what type the plan assigns. It does not query a carrier and cannot tell whether a line is active, ported or reachable.
Does the carrier lookup show who the number is with today?
It shows the carrier originally assigned the US number block in public NANPA reports. Ported numbers are not reflected, so the result is the original holder of the block, with the report date shown next to it.
What does the complaint count mean?
It is the number of consumer reports about the number found in public FTC and FCC complaint data, with first and last dates and the kinds of calls reported. Complaints are not verified, and a count of zero only means none were found in that data.
