# What Is My IP Address: Location and Network

See your public IPv4 or IPv6 address, its approximate city and country, the network that owns it, and whether it is a Tor exit or a hosting address.

This page shows the public address your connection is using and, on request, where that address is registered, which network owns it and whether it is a Tor exit or a hosting address. Paste any other address to look it up the same way.

## Facts

- Free, no account needed. The page reads your address from your connection to show it to you and saves nothing. The location and network details come from LookValid's lookup service, which receives the address when you ask for them and keeps the result, address included, for up to seven days so repeat lookups are quick.

## How it works

1. Open the page. It reads the public address your connection presents to websites and shows it.
2. Choose Show location and network. The address is looked up in open location and network datasets, and checked against the Tor exit list and published hosting ranges.
3. You see an approximate place, the network owner and any Tor or hosting match. Paste another address to repeat the lookup.

## Example result

IP address 8.8.8.8, looked up on 2026-10-19. Captured 2026-10-19.

- IP address: 8.8.8.8
- Version: IPv4
- Location: Mountain View, California, United States (US)
- Time zone: Not available from the location data
- Network owner: AS15169 Google LLC
- Connection: Hosting or cloud range (Google)

## Why the location can be wrong

An address is assigned to a network, not to a house. The place shown is where the network registered or routes that address, so it often names a nearby city or the provider headquarters rather than your street.

Mobile connections, company networks and shared addresses can show a city far from the device. Treat the location as a regional hint.

## Why a VPN changes the answer

Websites only see the address of the last hop your traffic leaves from. With a VPN, a proxy or Tor, that is the address of the VPN server or the exit, so the location and network owner describe that server and not you.

If the page shows a hosting range or a Tor exit and you did not expect it, check whether a VPN, a proxy or a company gateway is switched on.

## What each result line means and how far to trust it

| Line | What it tells you | How reliable it is |
| --- | --- | --- |
| IP address | The public address your connection presents to websites, in IPv4 or IPv6 form. | Exact for the connection that made the request. |
| Location | City, region and country where the address is registered or routed. | Country is usually right. City is a hint and is often wrong for mobile and business networks. |
| Time zone | The zone of that location, when the data carries one. | The free location data has no time zone field, so this line can read as not available. |
| Network owner | The autonomous system number and the organization that holds it, such as an internet provider. | Reliable. Registries publish who holds each network. |
| Connection | Whether the address is a listed Tor exit or sits in a published cloud or hosting range. | Reliable for those two lists. It does not detect consumer VPN apps. |

## Questions

### How accurate is the location?

The country is usually right and the city is a rough hint. The data places an address where its network is registered or routed, so mobile, business and shared connections can show a city far from you.

### Why does the address change when I turn on a VPN?

Websites see the address of the server your traffic leaves from. With a VPN that is the VPN server, so the address, location and network owner all describe the server and not your own connection.

### What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 addresses are four numbers such as 8.8.8.8. IPv6 addresses are longer and use groups of letters and digits separated by colons. Many connections use both, and this page shows whichever one your browser used to reach it.

### Can a website see my exact home address from my IP?

No. An address points to a network and a rough area. Only your internet provider can tie it to a household, and it does not hand that over to the sites you visit.

### Does this page save my address?

The page shows your address without saving it. When you ask for location and network details, the lookup service on LookValid receives the address and keeps the result, address included, for up to seven days so that repeat lookups are quick.
