# Free Reverse Phone Lookup for Unknown Callers

> **For AI agents:** the complete index of LookValid pages is [llms.txt](https://lookvalid.com/llms.txt). Every page is also served as markdown at its URL plus .md.

Free reverse phone lookup for an unknown caller. Check an unknown caller for free.

Paste the number that rang you. You see how many people reported it, when, and what the calls were about, then the carrier that received its block and the kind of line it is. It does not tell you the name of whoever is calling.

## Facts

- Free, no account needed. Your browser sends the number to our lookup service, which answers from public complaint and numbering records. A result stays cached for a week, number included, so asking again is quick.
- Related API product: [phone-spam](https://lookvalid.com/docs/api/phone-spam.md), 1 credit through the API.

## How it works

1. Paste the caller number exactly as your phone showed it. If it carries no plus sign and country code, name the country in the small field next to it, for example US or GB.
2. First the number is tested against the rules of its own country. Numbers from the US and Canada then continue to the complaint filings and the carrier block records.
3. The answer opens with complaints and the carrier block, followed by the formats, the line type and the area code region, so you can decide whether to call back.

## Example result

Caller number +1 201 200 0014, a US number, checked on 2026-10-29. Captured 2026-10-29.

- Complaints on record: 5
- Kinds of calls reported: Live voice, prerecorded voice, unwanted calls
- Carrier the block was assigned to: VERIZON NEW JERSEY, INC.
- Rate center and state: JERSEYCITY, NJ
- Line type: Landline or mobile
- Number: +12012000014, written (201) 200-0014 in the US
- Area code: 201, New Jersey

## What a reverse lookup can and cannot find

People searching this way usually want a name. Public records do not hold one for most phone numbers, so a lookup that honestly answers from public data tells you something different and often more useful: whether other people have already complained about this caller, and what the number is.

No name of a person or company is returned here, and nobody is searched for. What you get is the filings against the number plus the carrier records for its block.

## Reading the complaint history first

Start with the count and the dates. Many filings inside a few weeks, all describing the same kind of call, is the shape of a robocall run. A single filing from years ago says little.

Read the call kinds next. Prerecorded voice and unwanted calls point to automated dialing. Live voice points to a call center. A count of zero only means nobody filed a report yet. New scam numbers start at zero, and a number that was recycled can carry old reports that belong to its previous holder.

## What the carrier block adds

The carrier shown received the block of numbers your caller sits in. A block held by an internet phone provider is worth noting next to a long complaint list.

It is the first holder, not a promise about today. A number that moved to a new provider keeps showing its original block, and the lookup has no way to see that move.

## What to do with the answer

If the number has a long complaint history, do not call back or press any key in a recorded message. If it has none and the caller wanted payment, a verification code or private information, still treat the call as unverified and reach the organization through a contact you looked up yourself.

For a business that wants to screen numbers in sign-up forms or call lists, the same checks run through the API without the visitor allowance.

## What each part of a reverse lookup answer shows, its public source, and where it stops

| Part of the answer | Source | What it shows about the caller | Where it stops |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Complaint count and dates | FCC unwanted-call consumer complaints | How many people reported the number, and when the first and latest filings were made | Whether any single complaint was accurate, or who holds the number now |
| Kinds of calls reported | The call descriptions in the same filings | Live voice, prerecorded voice, text or other unwanted contact | The caller identity, the company name or the script used |
| Carrier block | NANPA reports on code and block assignments | Which carrier was handed the block first, plus the company code of the holder and its billing area | The carrier serving the number today, or whether it was ported |
| Line type | Plan ranges grouped by service type | Mobile, internet phone, toll free or other type where the plan separates them | Landline versus mobile for US and Canadian numbers, which share ranges |
| Formats and area code region | Google libphonenumber metadata and area code assignments | The number in standard forms and where its area code was first assigned | Where the caller is standing or who they are |

## Questions

### Does a reverse lookup here reveal the caller's name?

No. The records behind it hold complaints and carrier blocks, and none of them carry caller names. People and companies are never searched for.

### How do I find out who called me from an unknown number?

Check the number here for complaints and the carrier block. If a caller left a voicemail or a message, judge it by what it asks for. A genuine organization can be reached through its own published contact details.

### The lookup found no complaints. Is the caller safe?

Not necessarily. A number can be brand new, or spoofed so it belongs to someone else. Zero filings means none were found, not that the call was legitimate.

### Can a number have complaints and still be harmless now?

Yes. Numbers are reassigned. If the reports are old and the dates stop long ago, the number may have a new holder who has nothing to do with them.

### Does this work for numbers outside the United States?

The number check and line type work for most countries. The complaint and carrier block parts read US numbering records, so the page says why they were skipped for a number elsewhere.

### Is it free?

Yes. There is nothing to sign up for and no card to enter, and each visitor has a daily number of checks. Teams that screen numbers in bulk use the API for the same complaint check.
