# How to use Link Safety Check

What Link Safety Check takes in, which fields it returns and how credits are charged for each lookup.

## What it does

Checks the domain of a URL against the CERT Polska Warning List of malicious domains, whose licence allows commercial use, and reports whether the domain or a parent domain is listed and the date of the list. A URL on no list is not proof it is safe: the list only holds domains that have already been reported, and it checks the domain, not the page.

## What you send

Send these fields in the JSON body of the request.

Request fields for Link Safety Check

| Field | Type | Required | Limits |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| url | string | Required | up to 2,048 characters |

## What you get back

The `data` object of a successful response carries these fields. Every response also lists its `sources`, the `credits_charged` and whether it was a `cache_hit`.

Each field is described in the [API reference](https://lookvalid.com/docs/api/link-safety.md).

Response fields for Link Safety Check

| Field | Type |

| url | string |
| host | string |
| verdict | "listed" or "not_listed" |
| matches | list |
| feeds_checked | list |

| disclaimer | string |

## What it costs

1 credit per URL checked (a check that cannot run is free).

What each outcome costs

| Case | Charge |
| --- | --- |
| Completed lookup, found or not | 1 credit |
| Repeat inside 1 day | 0 credits |
| Errors and invalid requests | 0 credits |

## Run it

You can try it without an account in the [free tool](https://lookvalid.com/tools.md). The free tools share a limit per visitor.

From code, send a POST request to `https://YOUR_API_HOST/v1/link-safety` with your API key.

A request to Link Safety Check

```bash
curl -X POST https://YOUR_API_HOST/v1/link-safety \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $LOOKVALID_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"url":"https://example.com"}'
```

Full parameters and response fields are in the [API reference](https://lookvalid.com/docs/api/link-safety.md). To run a list of values, use a [bulk CSV job](https://lookvalid.com/help/api/bulk-csv-jobs.md).

## Good to know

- A repeat of the same lookup within 1 day is served from your cache and costs 0 credits.
- Every completed lookup is charged, whether or not it finds something.
- Invalid input and errors are never charged.
- The API allows 200 requests per 10 seconds per key.
